Thaumatropes

Definition of a Thaumatrope - A card with different pictures on opposite sides, for example a horse on one side and a jockey on the other which appear as if combined when the card is twirled rapidly, illustrating the persistence of visual impressions.

To crate a Thaumatrope you first need -
  • Piece of cardboard
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors & Glue
  • String
  • Camera/Pencil (depending if drawing the images)
1. Cut a circle out of the cardboard, whatever size you want, but not too small.
2. Once you have taken the pictures then crop them so they'll fit on, print them out and stick them onto the card making sure thy are perfectly in line with each other and one is upside down
3. Use a hole punch to create two holes on the sides and tie string in them both
4. Twist the string back and fourth in your fingers and watch the two separate images become one.

Flipbooks

Definition of a Flipbook - A small book consisting of a series of images in different positions that create the illusion of flowing movement when the thumb is placed so the pages flip quickly.

To create a flipbook you first need -

  • A stack of 3"x5" blank index cards or small book
  • A thick rubber band to hold the card together
  • A black magic marker (or dark colours)/ a camera if using photos
1. First draw out your ideas on some paper before beginning to create your flipbook
2. Draw/photograph each stage of movement on a separate index card until complete. (Make the movement changes in the images gradual)

3. 16 images will create a one second movie so make sure you have enough cards to make the movie a couple of seconds long (between 30-50)

If using a stack of cards it will be possible to make 4 separate flip books from one stack of cards.
